A Tax-Friendly Way To Offer a Helping Hand
Charlene and Allan
Last year, Charlene and Allan found a convenient and tax-efficient way to support one of their favorite charities, Second Harvest Food Bank, through an IRA’s required minimum distribution (RMD).
Charlene was a Catholic school teacher, and Allan ran his own business. Now in their retirement years, they want to give back for the blessings they received in life. Charlene and Allan truly believe in the power of philanthropy and have also been active volunteers with their church and local food pantry.
They discovered that giving through an IRA is an easy way to donate and not pay extra taxes. “It just seemed like the right thing to do. And we’d like to keep doing it as long as we can.”
Charlene and Allan know what it’s like to be in need and how just one emergency can lead to a financial crisis. Sometimes a helping hand is all that is needed to get back on track.
When Hurricane Katrina hit, they lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and they had to relocate to Pensacola until their home and son’s school were rebuilt. During this time of need, they received food at a St. Vincent de Paul pantry, and their son got a scholarship for his Catholic school tuition.
That’s why they believe in Second Harvest. They know that their gift will help people all across South Louisiana, from their local food pantry in Mandeville to New Orleans, the Bayou Region, Acadiana and Lake Charles. And next time a hurricane impacts Louisiana, Second Harvest will be there to help.
